About the Asphalt Road-eo
The Asphalt Road-eo is an engineering challenge introducing undergraduate students to the asphalt pavement industry. It presents them with a hands-on design problem that requires creativity and problem-solving. Organizers of the competition supply each participating team with the same set of materials, tasking them to use these materials to create an asphalt mixture. Specifically, they must create a 20-inch by 20-inch slab employing their unique design.
What to Expect
During the competition, the slabs produced by each team undergo a series of assessments in several key aspects:
- Friction (for safety)
- Rutting (for durability)
- Cracking (for durability)
- The incorporation of innovative materials (considering cost and sustainability)
Additionally, there is an interview segment where each team can explain their design rationale to a panel of judges drawn from both the asphalt industry and the Texas Department of Transportation.
The Asphalt Road-eo offers undergraduate students an enjoyable and challenging way to explore the asphalt pavement industry, which is essential for our nation's transportation infrastructure and economy.
