Polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders are widely used by state DOT’s in hot mix asphalt and a variety of surface treatments, but less so by local agencies. This presentation will discuss how polymers work, why PMA is used, and point out applications that city and county engineers should consider for their networks. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of polymer-modified asphalt binders and how they are used and specified in Texas. Considerations for sampling/verification testing and recent developments in PMA will also be discussed.
