Asphalt ROAD-EO is a team competition for undergraduate students designed to introduce them to asphalt materials as an open-ended design problem. Competition organizers provide each team with the same materials to design an asphalt mixture. The teams then prepare a 20-inch x 20-inch slab using their design. The slab is evaluated on the day of the competition for friction (safety), rutting (durability), cracking (durability), and use of innovative materials (cost and sustainability). The competition also includes an interview section in which each team will present its design rationale to judges from the asphalt industry and the Texas Department of Transportation. The asphalt pavement industry is a critical component of our transportation infrastructure and is vital to our nation's economy. Asphalt ROAD-EO provides undergraduates a fun and challenging opportunity to explore this industry.
